When visiting Medellin, Colombia everyone tells you to visit La Piedra del Peñol. The Rock is located about 90 minutes away, near the pretty village of Guatapé. We went along and climbed the 649 steps up the 220 metre monolith.

It’s a touristy experience with many souvenir stands at the bottom and even a bar and gift shop on top of the rock, but Colombian tourists far outnumber foreigners. Music was blaring and we have come to the conclusion that Colombians don’t think an experience is fun if it doesn’t include alcohol and music. Even a climb up a rock!

Although the experience wasn’t quite as natural as we expected the views from the top are impressive: an extensive reservoir full of tiny islands can be seen in all directions.
