Photo of the Week: Rock Star Photo Shoot at The Black House, Chiang Rai image

On our recent motorbike trip from Chiang Mai to the Burmese border we stopped off in Chiang Rai and visited the Black House (Baan Si Dum in Thai), the estate of Thai artist Thawan Duchanee.

The complex is set in peaceful gardens and features many contemporary buildings influenced by traditional Thai styles, almost all in black. Everything is made from wood and animal skulls and bones are found everywhere, often used to make the furniture.

It was an incredible place with lots to explore and we’ll be writing a full article about it soon, but here’s a photo of Simon in one of the church-like buildings. It seemed like the perfect setting for a rock star photo shoot.

  1. The vehicle you were riding is not called a Moped, try scooter or better yet Motorcy as the Thais call it. Then when you have problems they might understand what you are referring to. a moped has a human powered option like a bicycle…

    • Yeah, we felt guilty as vegetarians enjoying the Black House so much, but we figure we just picked up the skulls of animals that were already dead (we hope anyway)! The motorbike ride was in parts freezing and exhausting, but mostly lots of fun! We’ve just got back from our second (less ambitious) motorbike trip so we are definitely hooked.

  2. Cool picture — it’s neat how the water buffalo hide in the front really plays with the scale of the photo. There’s so much stuff packed into that room — including the rock star in the back! It’s huge!
