Last week our Photo of the Week featured Kathkali performers in Kerala, India applying their extravagant makeup in preparation for a performance. This week’s photo is from the performance itself in Fort Kochi.

This definitely makes me miss Cochin!! That Kathkali performance was an absolute highlight of my visit…and I’m always surprised at how many people give this a miss during their India travels.
I’d go again if I ever made it back to South India!

We’ve been missing India lately too. I think it’s the lack of spicy food in Argentina! Kathkali is a definite highlight – it’s so stunning. We haven’t seen anything else like it.
Looks like an awesome performance, need to check this out if I go to India! Every time I see big head piece like this, I always think how calm do they have to move so the head piece will not fall off! Seems like with my clumsy level, I won’t be able to do it right!

They are amazingly graceful and have such stamina. Just getting ready with the make up and costumes take hours and then the performances go on all night! We definitely recommend India anyway.
I had seen a performance for the first time at Varkala, soon after having seen the make-up and costume happen. Sitting there, I had wondered too, which enactment was more difficult for the artists – the dance or the make-up. It had brought back memories of a film by the director – Adoor Gopalakrishnan about the Kathakali artist ‘Kalamandalam Raman Kutty Nair’. It was a beautiful film.
