My First Half Marathon in Sonoma Wine Country

The more time we spend travelling, the more travel becomes the norm. To continue to grow we have to find new challenges, try things that scare us, that we never thought we were capable of.

I’ve written before about discovering a passion for running on our travels, as a way to test myself mentally and physically, and to explore new places. I felt so good after completing my first 10k run in Thailand last Christmas that I set myself the goal of running a half marathon in 2014. Last month I did just that. I ran it faster than I expected. And I loved it.

Vineyard Views in Sonoma: Flipkey Apartment Review

When I was planning my first half marathon I had visions of staying in a cute B&B a few minute’s walk from the race start line. No worrying about parking or portaloos, and I’d be back in no time for a shower afterwards. When I finally committed to the race six weeks before I realised this wasn’t going to be possible—everywhere was booked up. My run was in Healdsburg, a pretty and rather posh town in Sonoma wine country, about an hour north of San Francisco. Prices are high here, especially on a Saturday night in October (harvest season) when there’s a half marathon in town.

My Vegan Experiment in Portland

I’ve been a vegetarian for 23 years but I’ve never wanted to be vegan; even less so as we travel and it’s hard enough avoiding meat and fish, let alone dairy too. It was on a last minute whim that I decided to go vegan for our nine days in Portland, Oregon. While researching vegetarian restaurants in this alternative city it seemed that veganism was widespread. There were tons of options and I thought it would be a good way to start a healthy eating kick, after a rather unhealthy few weeks of chocolate, cheddar, and chips in England.
